What are you reading anyway?” “The Great Gatsby.” As Carnell opened his mouth to speak he was cut off. “It’s not completely ass. There are some good parts and the details are amazing, but sometimes, like in the beginning are too descriptive, which causes you to lose focus. The book is an acquired taste,” said their teammate Bryan peering around the gym. “Spoken like a true genius,” added Marcel. “If you need help understanding the book, you know who get at,” said Bryan. “Thanks man.” He just nodded his head & pulled out his cell.
Marcel and Carnell just looked at each other. Cool, calm, and collected Bryan was slightly frantic. “You iight B?” “Have yall seen Freedom?” “Naw,” answered Marcel. “Who?” asked Carnell. “Freedom, she normally chills with me & Chris in school & she & I always get something get something to eat after practice,” answered Bryan. The clueless look on his face stayed. “She’s on the track team,” added Marcel. “Sorry, nothing.” “Well I’ll catch yall tomorrow,” Bryan said. “Be safe B,” said Marcel. “Likewise.” He finally shut his phone, put his it in his pocket and pulled out his iPod before he left.
“How do you not know who Freedom is?” Marcel asked. “Because I don’t...” “She’s probably gonna valedictorian next year.” “Valedictorian, eh? If she’s so smart why does she hang around Chris?” Marcel took off his fitted and scratched his head, “Good question.” He laughed. “Her and Bryan go out or something?” “Naw, not that I know of. I could’ve swore I saw-” He abruptly stopped in mid sentence. “What man?” “Nothing.” “Marcel, I know you’re lying. You can’t look at me when you lie and you gone back to reading that damned book.” Marcel sighed, shut the book and gave Carnell his complete attention before saying, “I saw Hallie all up on his today after Gym...” Carnell cocked his head to the side. “My Hallie?” Carnell said slightly hurt. Marcel nodded. “My own teammate,” he laughed, “I’m honestly not surprised she’d do that.” “Bryan would never do that though. He’s good peoples.” “He’s free to do what he wants to do. Hallie and I have been done.” “That don’t mean the pain is gone.” “Marcel, new topic.” “Okay, but if you want to-” “Cel!” His scream echoed throughout the gym.
He was still scorned from his relationship with Hallie. She took a huge piece of him when they broke up. She was the reason he preferred to hook-up instead of have a real relationship. He couldn’t bare the thought of having another person he loved break his heart. So he went clubbing, and to wild parties hoping to find something to take his mind off the pain, keep him busy and for a face who cared.
Most the time he came empty, the afterburn still fresh.
He was running from love, but love was what he needed most.
“Sorry man. I shouldn’t have pressed you.” “Naw, I bugged out. My b.” “We cool?” “You know it.” They did their handshake and the whole situation was forgotten as if it never happened.
“I think I found the solution to your girl problems,” Marcel stated as he sat down on a bleacher, “I was invited to join this dating web site by my cuz. You fill out all these questions and they match you to people according to your answers.” “How do I know my perfect match ain’t some 30 year old woman who likes to prey on teenage boys?” “It’s for high school students only and you have to be invited. That keeps all the psycho bitches away,” Marcel said with a smile. Carnell laughed, “Fine. I’ll try it.” “Word, when Trey’s ass decides he want to come out of the damn locker room and take us home he can drop us off at your place and we can fix you profile.” “Sounds good.” “What sounds good?” asked Trey walking towards them. “Chinese,” lied Carnell. “I’m not hungry,” Trey stated, “Sorry ya’ll had to wait, one of my latest prospects called.”
All of Trey’s ‘girls’ were ‘prospects,’ potential wifeys. He said one day he’d chose one, but he hadn’t found the one to make him forget the others.
“Come on, let me drop yall home.” “What does she do?” asked Marcel as they walked out of the gym. “She a dancer at club Pure,” Trey said with a smirk. They all knew he had a thing for dancers. Carnell gave her 3 weeks, tops, then he’d get bored with her and break her heart. Carnell just hoped she’s cope with hers better than he did.
