She watched as he moved up and down the court drilling the ball with ease. He was in his natural habitat & everyone knew that; that’s why they came and watched.
He’d earned renown at the age of 15, and that was before he really got into baseball.
The high school loved him for the fact they had been undefeated ever he stepped into its halls. The agents loved him because he had mastered the art of being a team player before they had a chance to get to him. The town loved his because he was a local celebrity. The girls loved him because he was easy on the eyes & had name that was a bona fide in.
She loved love him for him. His personality, generosity, his silliness, charm; everything. But he knew none of this. How could she ever tell him with all things in the way?
She was the first one to jump up when the buzzer with off, signaling they had won another game. The crowd went wild with cheers and applause as the team jumped up and down with joy. It was then that the boys who had stolen her heart: teammates Bryan Calvin Wales- her secret love, and Carnell Robert Young- her dream boy, pulled each other into a tight victory hug while her heart did a back flip. Adrenaline still pumping, she ran down the bleachers and into the sea of people piling onto the court. She pushed and shoved her way through, not caring who she hurt, yelling, “Bryan! Bryan!” Once she had made it to the center, their eyes locked and he smirked. She lightly giggled and ran into his open arms.
“Congrats,” she whispered gently into his ear. “Thanks,” he cheerily said as he pulled out of the embrace. He just stood there as the gym lights reflected off the sweat on his skin. He opened his mouth to speak but was pulled away by a group of girls. She just sighed, used to it. He turned his head to her and shrugged. She just pointed at the gym doors. He nodded his head, understanding. Like every other game she’d wait for the celebrating to be over and for him to shower and change outside the gym doors. They’d then go get something to eat with some of Bryan’s teammates.
As she started to make her way through the crowd she saw Carnell and his best friends being admired by their usual group of groupies. “Great game Carnell,” she yelled attempting to get his attention. “Thanks,” he yelled, not even looking in her direction. She chastised herself for even trying as she walked away.
She hated herself sometimes for being so stupid, so naïve, so optimistic. She’d be on cloud nine in her dreams, only to smacked by reality when she’d awoken. But she couldn’t help who she loved, as much as she wanted to. Because is she had her way she’d never fallen for her best friend or someone so unattainable.
